Step 1: Understanding the Potentiometer Terminals

The potentiometer has three terminals:

  • Terminal 1 (Input): Connect to the input voltage or signal.
  • Terminal 2 (Wiper): The adjustable terminal. It outputs the divided voltage or resistance.
  • Terminal 3 (Ground): Connect to the ground or the other end of the circuit.

The resistance between Terminals 1 and 3 is fixed to the resistor’s maximum value, while the resistance between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (or Terminal 2 and Terminal 3) varies depending on the knob’s position.

Step 2: Wiring the Potentiometer

Basic Voltage Divider Setup

  1. Prepare the Circuit: Identify the voltage source and the load to which the potentiometer will be connected.
  2. Connect the Terminals:
    • Terminal 1: Connect to the positive voltage source.
    • Terminal 3: Connect to the ground.
    • Terminal 2 (Wiper): Connect to the load or measuring device.
  3. Verify Connections: Ensure all connections are secure to avoid loose contacts.

Step 3: Adjusting the Resistance

  1. Turn the Knob: Use the rotary knob to adjust the resistance. The resistance between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 increases as you turn clockwise, decreasing the resistance between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.
  2. Multi-Turn Feature: The 10-turn design allows for precise adjustments. Take your time to fine-tune the desired resistance.
  3. Use a Multimeter: Measure the resistance or voltage output using a multimeter to ensure accuracy.

Step 4: Mounting the Potentiometer

  • Panel Mounting: Use the built-in mounting thread and nut to attach the potentiometer to a panel or enclosure. Secure tightly to avoid movement during operation.
  • PCB Mounting: Align the terminals with the PCB holes and solder them securely.

Step 5: Applications

Example 1: Brightness Control for an LED

  1. Connect Terminal 1 to a 5V power supply.
  2. Connect Terminal 3 to ground.
  3. Connect Terminal 2 to the input pin of an LED driver circuit.
  4. Adjust the knob to vary the LED brightness.

Example 2: Volume Control

  1. Connect Terminal 1 to the audio signal input.
  2. Connect Terminal 3 to ground.
  3. Connect Terminal 2 to the audio amplifier input.
  4. Adjust the knob to set the desired audio level.
